How Lawrence & Bundy Began

The founders, Allegra Lawrence-Hardy (ALH) and Thomas Bundy (TRB) sat down to talk about how Lawrence & Bundy began and why it needed to exist.

What do you tell people when they ask about starting the firm? When they ask you "why?" what do you say?

I say "because it didn't exist." And we believed it needed to, mostly because we wanted to work at a place like this—we wanted other people to have that option too. We knew the model could work, and we had decades of experience at larger firms. We understood the business side and the client side. We set out to create a firm that could succeed in both worlds.

Exactly. We both got our start in BigLaw, so of course we had our ideas about how that experience could be better, especially for black lawyers and other underrepresented groups. Someone observed that we "created the firm we could not find," and I loved that because that's exactly why Lawrence & Bundy exists. We needed a space for law to be practiced in the way we believe it should be. So we created that space here.

I will never forget those early conversations. We wanted a firm that focused on client relationships—I mean really invested in a true partnership with clients. We are the firm that understands their industry, their pain points and their goals for the future. We look for opportunities to dig deep with our clients as business partners so that we can serve them better.

We take our relationships very seriously. If we don't know what's keeping our clients up at night, we don't know how to be effective. And then there's the whole diversity thing . . .

Ahhhh yes, the diversity thing. We actually believe—and have a pretty impressive body of evidence—to demonstrate that it works. And we're not talking about just checking a box. It works to surround yourself with people who have different life experiences and to listen and to learn from them.

Yeah, that's huge for us. True collaboration. It's a value we want to demonstrate with our clients, and a value that shows up over and over again with our team. So we create opportunities for people who have been historically underrepresented in this field to showcase their talent.

And we're not doing it to be do-gooders. We're doing it because it works. Because we want to do great work, and we have determined this is how we can produce the absolute best quality work out there. Do you every worry about sustaining a culture like that? How do we do it?

One hundred percent. It is. They know when we say "We really want to hear what you think" that we mean it.

They know that we expect them to bring their whole selves to work—their authenticity, their perspective and their talent. They understand we're relying on it. We are proud of the work we produce at Lawrence & Bundy, but we are not surprised by it. We hire the best people we can find. We rally around a set of values that makes sense to everyone. Then we just don't stop until we get a great product. Our team is resilient, dedicated and focused. That's an almost unbeatable combination.
